What Size of Matching Chain Should I Purchase?

Choosing the Matching Chain Length and Thickness

Non-custom necklace chains come in several different standard lengths. There are five standard lengths for women and four for men. Each person is unique in his or her preferences. Not all standard sizes work well for each person. Depending on the style of necklace, jewelers can sometimes shorten or lengthen chains. Custom chains and necklaces always cost more, but if the fit is perfect and they are frequently used, they are often worth the cost.

Men

When choosing a chain for a man, keep in mind that most men like their chains to sit right around their collarbones. An 18-20” length is usually the best. If the chain is meant to hold a cross or medallion of some kind, a longer chain might be best. Try to buy a chain that is a little longer than you think you might need. Chains that are too short are harder to lengthen. Chains that are too long are almost always able to be shortened.

Women

When choosing a chain for a woman, think about where the woman is likely to wear the necklace and what items of clothing she might wear it with as an accessory. Some women like different lengths for different occasions. Choker necklaces, which are generally 16” in length are good with cocktail dresses that have a scoop neck. They may not work well with a turtleneck, on the other hand. Also take the recipient’s size into consideration. A 24” necklace might hang down too far for a petite woman. In general, size is more important with shorter necklaces. It is better that the necklace be too long than too short. The 18” length is the most popular for women. This length generally hits women right around the collarbone. The 20” length sits a bit below the color line and a 22” chain sits just below the neckline. The longest standard size is 24” and that size hits a woman well below the neckline.

Children

Like with clothes, children wear smaller sizes in lengths for chains and other jewelry items. For girls, the length will depend on where the necklace needs to hang. A 12-14” necklace will likely be the most popular option for girls. Keep in mind that kids grow fast and buying a necklace that is too long is not necessarily a bad thing. The child will grow into the necklace and will be able to wear it longer. If the item is too small, it will not get any use at all.

For boys, subtract 2” from the normal size a man would wear. Try a 14” chain instead of 16” and it should work for many boys. Necklace chains can often be reduced so it is better to buy one that is a little too long. If the boy needs to have a few links removed, encourage him to keep the links so he can have them put back in the necklace later if he grows and it gets too small.

Size of Cross, Crucifix or Medallion

The size of the cross, crucifix or medallion greatly depends on the style of chain. If the chain is large and thick, a tiny pendant will look silly hanging from it. Take the size and style of the chain into consideration when choosing the right religious item to hang from the chain. Another thing to think through is the style of the individual who might be wearing the cross or crucifix. If the person is bold about their faith and likes to make a big statement, a large cross might be best. If the person wants an item that can be worn on a daily basis with any type of outfit, a medium to small crucifix would fit in well. There are enough different options in medallions, crucifix crosses, and plain crosses that any option is available. Buyers can search their local Christ gift shops and also look at online Catholic jewelry websites to get an idea of all of the options that are for sale.

What Size Cross, Crucifix or Medallion?

Women generally wear smaller crosses and pendants that are around 1” or smaller in size. If the woman is petite, an even smaller cross is better. A larger woman might like a cross that is slightly larger than average. Some women even like pendants that make a bold statement that are 2” or larger in size. For a safe gift, stick with a 1” cross or crucifix pendant.

Women

Women generally wear smaller crosses and pendants that are around 1” or smaller in size. If the woman is petite, an even smaller cross is better. A larger woman might like a cross that is slightly larger than average. Some women even like pendants that make a bold statement that are 2” or larger in size. For a safe gift, stick with a 1” cross or crucifix pendant.

Men

Men’s jewelry is often larger than women’s. While most women’s pendants are around 1” in size, the religious jewelry for men is usually larger than 1” and smaller than 2”. This size range is appropriate for crosses and medallions. There are some men who enjoy larger statements of faith, but it is safest to buy the normal size in order to ensure the man will enjoy the gift.
